• IS A CARD READER NECESSARY?  No.  Others may include a card reader as a gimmick because the memory card pops directly into your scanner and if you learn to program your card on your own, you would just use the data cable that came with your scanner and plug it into your computer and you will save the headache of removing your card from your scanner, so in short, a separate card reader is not necessary to program your card.
